The patas monkey is predominately terrestrial, adapted for life in the harsh savanna that extends around the southern periphery of the Sahara. The social and physical adaptations of the patas permit them to exploit the savannas successfully, but climate catastrophes can cause numerous deaths and reduction of the breeding population.
